There's an easy version of this business. You build a polished, proprietary suite, make it just integrated enough that leaving is painful, and let switching costs do the retention work. It's a well-worn playbook and it works — for the vendor.
We didn't build that. Alverion's office layer — documents, sheets, mail, storage — is an open-source stack you fully own. That was a deliberate choice, and it follows directly from what we tell customers sovereignty means.
Lock-in is the opposite of sovereignty
You cannot promise someone control over their data and then design the exits to hurt. A walled garden is a sovereignty story with the ending quietly rewritten: your data is "yours" right up until you try to take it somewhere else.
Open-source and open formats mean the door is always unlocked. If you ever want to run the stack yourself, move to different infrastructure, or simply leave, your documents and data come with you in formats you don't need our permission to read. Knowing you can leave is what makes staying a real choice rather than a trap.
Tools your team already knows
There's a practical payoff too. An office suite people already understand — files, folders, mail, a place to write and calculate — needs no training budget and no migration drama. The novelty in Alverion isn't a reinvented word processor; it's what runs inside the familiar surfaces.
We'd rather be unremarkable where you want boring reliability and remarkable where it counts.
The surface your agents read and write
The office stack isn't a separate product bolted next to the AI. It's the surface the agents work on. The same documents you edit are the ones a fleet reads from and writes to; the same mailbox is where work shows up. Because the layer is open, that integration is transparent — you can see what the agents touched, not just trust that they behaved.
A capable agent is far more useful when it lives in the tools your team already uses, on data you actually own. Building the open version was more work and it forgoes the comfortable lock-in. It's also the only version consistent with the promise on the rest of this site.
